In this module Heather Watt (Entertainment Lawyer, Co-Creator of Producer Essentials) gives an overview of the Canadian tax credit system for both Canadian and non-Canadian producers filming or posting in Canada, noting the interaction between federal and provincial programs, and highlighting key details that should be top of mind when seeking eligibility.

Filing a Tax Credit Application

In this module Gemma Davis, CPA and Owner of Sierra Accounting, will provide a brief overview of the timing of the tax credit process, including when applications should be filed and tax returns and claimed prepared, how to structure your books and records, and an overview of what to expect should the CRA audit your tax credit claim and what you can do in order to be as prepared as possible.

She is a trusted advisor to her clients and assists with all production-related legal and business affairs needs, including drafting agreements and negotiating the hiring of cast and crew, preparing the appropriate corporate vehicles for various productions, advising producers through the production financing process, and helping them navigate the provincial and federal tax credit systems. Heather is a co-creator of Producer Essentials.

Gemma is a CPA, CA specializing in media and entertainment in Vancouver. After obtaining her CA designation and working several years at Ernst & Young LLP in their small business and media and entertainment division, she opened her own practice in 2015 solely focused on media and entertainment. Gemma assists clients with the preparation of tax credit approval applications, prepares tax credit opinion letters for bank financing, prepares the year end and corporate tax filings which include tax credit claims, and prepares the audit reports on production costs for the regulatory bodies requiring it.
